Cake Decorating Trends for 2016

We're almost into the new year which is a perfect time to take a look into the styles you can expect to see for Wedding and Celebration cakes in 2016. We'll be seeing a continuation of some the trends which made an appearance earlier this year plus a few new trends which are sure to take 2016 by storm.

Continuing Trends

Among the continuing from this year are painted cakes. The winning style of hand painted cakes which looks to be moving forward into the new year are the gorgeous water colour effect designs, while other styles are also beginning to appear. In 2015 hand painted flowers were popular, however as the water colour style has emerged and increased in popularity, this seems to have sparked new ideas. We are beginning to see more elaborate designs such as stained glass and marble effects, and even inspiration from Monet.

We'll also see a continuation of the naked cakes and metallic cakes. The naked cake is still a popular choice for rustic weddings and when teamed with fresh flowers for a touch of decoration it's easy to see why. While the metallic cake trend, a stark contrast to the naked cake, seems only to be growing in popularity. The trend is definitely the most popular combined with an Art Deco theme.

Woodland Theme

A fabulous trend which has risen in popularity throughout 2015, and looks set to take 2016 by storm, are realistic-looking woodland themed cakes with bark details, fake soil and moss as well as various plant and wildlife details like grass and mushrooms, or modelled animals. This is a great style perfect for rustic or seasonal weddings and celebrations.

For a good starting point for this trend try the PME bark impression mat or the FMM bark impression mat for a subtle texture or the FPC bark silicone mould for a deep textured effect.

We love this theme because of the huge variety it offers. Any of your favourite elements of the woodland can be used to create anything from a small cake styled like a realistic stump to a giant show stopper.

Modern Flowers and Ruffled Roses

Modern flower designs emerged in the later part of 2015, which are likely to be increasingly popular in the next year. Sugar flowers in simplified shapes and bright colours, often flatter and arranged across tiers rather than bunched together in a spray, are great for a fresh, unique look.

Another emerging modern flower style is wafer paper flowers. These are not only modern-looking but they look as beautiful and delicate as real flowers. This method seems the ultimate compromise between traditional or modern sugar flowers and real fresh flowers.

Ruffled roses are also a continuing trend, matched with more styles than ever before, branching away from the vintage style that re-affirmed their popularity.

Monogrammed Cakes

With an ever increasing desire to have a unique cake for your big event, monogrammed designs have become one of the choices for personalisation. The possibilities are endless for how this can be done, from the choice of font to the size; you can do two initials or just one; they can be modern or traditional in style; hand-painted or cut from paste with letter cutters. This is a versatile design style with which you can be sure you would not have the same as anyone else.

We're sure this could be one of the biggest hits of 2016, as it fits all other design styles from modern to traditional

Lace Wedding Cakes

This pretty as a picture style is a timeless classic which is making a re-appearance. There are so many ways to achieve this affect now, from traditional methods like brush embroidery to newer methods such as cake lace silicone mats. This is an absolute must for girly or vintage themes.

Back to Tradition

A return to tradition is also in order in the coming year with white on white detailed designs in royal icing seeing an increase back into popularity. Piped royal icing designs can range from delicate to ornate and modern twists on traditional styles are welcomed. Team this look with decorations in fresh roses for the full traditional effect.

Get practicing your piping because these traditional styles are making a come back! Try fine piping for updated style or the Lambeth method for something more ornate
